Chapter 17 - Odysseus Goes to Town

Summary: (Eliza)

In this chapter Telemachus returns home. He meets up with the swineherd in the city before going home and tells him the plan about the 'beggar'. The 'beggar' than tells Telemachus he does not want to be left alone on the streets so Telemachus takes him along with him. When Telemachus reaches his home, everyone greets him through their tears of happiness. His mother comes and sees him and is overwhelmed with emotions that her son has returned. He tells her to go back upstairs and just pray to the gods and tell Zeus they will give him unending offerings. Before Penelope goes upstairs and the suitors come, Telemachus tells his mother of his journey and what he learned about his father. Then, Theoclymenus tells Penelope and Telemachus that Odysseus is in his home country but they do not know where. Shortly after, they all sat down to have a feast rejoicing the homecoming of Telemachus. While Eumaeus and Odysseus are making their way into the city, they run into Melanthius. He is very mean to them which makes Odysseus extremely outraged. Eumaeus ends up getting into a physical attack with Melanthius. Not knowlingly, both Melanthius, Eumaeus, and Odysseus all go to Odysseus' palace. When Eumaeus and Odysseus get to the palace, Odysseus sees the dog, Argus that he himself bred right before he left. As soon as Argus recognizes Odysseus, he dies after 20 years of living. When Eumaeus and Odysseus go into the palace, Eumaeus is asked to join the table and Odysseus is told to beg the suitors for scraps of food. After dinner, Antinous rags on Eumaeus for bringing in another beggar. Telemachus then takes it in to his own hands and tells Antinous basically that what he said was not okay with him. Odysseus and Antinous go at eachother verbally for a while after while everyone is watching the quarrel. After all of the nonsense, Penelope calls the stranger up to talk to him personally. She thinks that he might have seen Odysseus or heard of where he is. He tells her that he is an old family friend of Odysseus. Penelope now orders for all of the suitors to be killed because that is what she interprets as Telemachus' sneeze. She also sends for the stranger but he says that he would rather wait for sundown so that is what they do.
